Introduction to GPS Mission beta

How much does it cost to play GPS Mission?

Orbster (the provider of GPS Mission) charges nothing for playing. But during the game you transmit internet data with your phone.

You will have to pay your phone company for that data volume. Depending on the deal you have with your provider (your plan), cost may vary a lot. In some cases cost may be prohibitively high. You are responsible for your online data transfer bill yourself.

If you have no idea how much data transfer will cost you, don't play! Please, be sure you know what you are doing.

Data volume

Playing GPS Mission for 30 minutes will require on average 1.5 Megabytes of data transfer (when walking and not driving by car).

Plans

Modern phone contracts mostly have acceptable data rates for playing GPS Mission. But in the end, only you can find out how much data transfer costs with your tariff. You should look at your phone contract (plan) and check out your provider's web site.

By the way, it's easy to get a cheap contract. There is absolutely no need to have an expensive data plan today. If you are dishing out big dollars or Euros (or Pounds, or Krones, ...), you have the wrong phone deal! There are a lot of cheap data plans available in the US and in Europe. Low-cost or prepaid contracts often offer prices of less than 0.30 Cents per Megabyte. This would set you at about 1 EUR (roughly 1.60 $) for playing about an hour. The best solution are data flat-rates.

Your plan

To understand your online cost, check how much you are charged for transferring data. If you don't have a flat rate, you should try to find out if you are charged per volume (Megabytes) or per online time (or a combination).

  • Check if you are charged per data volume (per Megabyte). If so, how much does your provider charge you for a Megabyte? Check especially if there is a threshold at which the cost per Megabyte changes.
  • Check if you are charged per online time. How much does an online minute cost?

Keeping cost in check

When playing GPS Mission you can reduce data volume by following these simple tipps:

  • Don't play if you don't understand your data transfer cost per Megabyte (or minute).
  • Turn the GPS Mission software off when you are not playing. It constantly communicates with the server and generates data volume. Leave it running only when you play.
  • You could even turn the software off when walking between checkpoints.
  • Don't use the program when you are driving (car, bus, train, it doesn't matter). GPS Mission will download maps of your surroundings. If the client is running while you move at high speeds, a lot of maps will be downloaded - wasting a lot of data transfer volume. Only use GPS Mission when walking on foot.
  • There are a number of tools available for checking data transfer and controlling online cost. If you are using mobile internet services, it's a good idea to have a look at them - unless you have a good data plan or a flat rate. On windows mobile try this tool by efficasoft.
