Introduction to GPS Mission beta
Playing on Nokia phones

Best devices to play

GPS Mission works best on the

  • Nokia N95, N95 8GB and N82
  • Nokia 6110 Navigator

Mobile download

  • If you haven't done it yet, register now. You will need a user name to download and play.
  • Start the web browser on your phone. Go to http://www.gpsmission.com/
  • Enter your user name and password.
  • Select Nokia download (J2ME S60).
  • Press OK/Accept if asked if you really want to download and install the file.
  • If everything went ok, GPS MISSION is now available under "Menu/Applications".

Download from the web

You can also download the GPS Mission game software using the web download page. To install GPS Mission on your Nokia, you need Nokia PC Suite 6. If you don't have it, you can download it from Nokia.

  • Download the file ZIP file to your computer.
  • Unzip the file to a directory on your PC. It contains a file ending in "GPSMission.jar" and a file ending in "GPSMission.jad".
  • Start Nokia PC Suite and connect your phone to your computer using an USB cable.
  • Select "Install Applications" in the PC Suite and install the "GPSMission.jar" file - make sure the "GPSMission.jad" file is in the same directory on your PC.
  • Your phone will issue a security warning during installation. Press "continue" on your phone anyway.
  • Choose phone memory and not your SIM-card for installation.
  • If everything went ok, GPS Mission is now available under "Menu/Applications".

Playing for the first time

  • Press "yes" when asked if you allow access to GPS position data and "yes" to allow access to the network.
  • When asked which internet access to use, select your mobile service provider. This should be your normal phone contract. Do not select WLAN access. Be sure you understand your data tariffs.

My N95 takes too long to get a position. I'm faster using a sextant.

The N95 has (or has had) a known problem with its GPS acquisition speed.

The situation has been improved a lot by the introduction of AGPS (Assisted GPS) on the N95 by Nokia. If you think your N95's GPS is absolutely not usable, it's really worth trying AGPS.

Select on your phone: Tools-->Settings-->General-->Positioning-->Positioning Methods (German version)
Make sure ONLY Assisted GPS is checked! In our experience the phone does not use Assisted GPS if other options are checked also!

AGPS needs an internet connection. You have to set the internet connection for AGPS. This should be the same connection you use for playing GPS Mission.
Again on your phone: Tools-->Settings-->General-->Positioning-->Positioning Server: Select your internet connection provider.

Voila, AGPS!

Provider issues: If it doesn't work, it may be because your provider does not accept the protocol used for AGPS.

The AGPS technology uses an external server that supplies your phone with up-to-date info about the GPS satellite constellation. This information gives the GPS chip a head start when trying to get your position.

AGPS is available on all the new N95s you can buy at the moment. On older ones (pre Version 12.0.013 firmware), you will have to get a firmware update. If you couldn't find the options mentioned above, check if you need to update the firmware. There is a pretty decent description here.
